Speed Test

I've come across an interesting application on the Android store; however, similar applications are available on the Apple app store as well. I downloaded the free application called Sensorly. Sensorly allows me to test my network speed in my current location. It is an very informative application, it can even possible give you the final nudge to switch services depending on where you are and what speeds you are getting. Personally on Verizon in San Luis Obispo at the Cal Poly library, I get download speeds of 1.66 Mbps and upload speeds of .85 Mbps.

The scope of this program goes beyond just reporting the users speed.  It will compare your results to others with different carries in your area. Unfortunately this is very users based, so the comparison results would depend on other users with this application that have run a speed test in your area. Less populated cities such as San Luis Obispo are at a disadvantage compared to San Francisco or LA. The speed test takes 2.85 MB, so if you have that much to spare its worth finding out what service is the best for you in your area.
