The Samsung Galaxy S2 Versus The Flagship Smartphones iPhone 4S-Head To Head

Apple has recently launched their new flagship smartphone, the iPhone 4S. With the smartphone market flooded with high end devices, how does it stack up against the offering of other major players such as Samsung? In this article, I will attempt to find out by pitting the iPhone 4S against the Samsung Galaxy S2.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has proven to be a very popular device, as was the original Galaxy S. In fact, the Galaxy S2 was recently crowned "Phone of the Year" by gadget magazine T3. This is no mean feat, considering the fact that it faced competition from impressive some devices, with the Motorola Atrix, HTC, HTC Incredible Sensation S and Apple iPhone 4 all making the shortlist. The Samsung Galaxy S2 came out on top for a numberof reasons.

The handset boasts all the bells and whistles of a high end Android device in terms of software, with access to the Android Market and the Samsung TouchWiz UI. Hardware wise, the device is impressive in pretty much every aspect. To provide all the necessary computing power to hardware and software alike, there is a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor which aids many aspects of the phones, ranging from performance response times of the screen, multitasking, web browsing and many more. The camera boasts 8 megapixels, with 1080p video capture and comes with an LED flash along with a comprehensive package of adjustable settings and image enhancing features. The screen is also another impressive feature of the Galaxy S2. It is large, measuring 4.3 inches, with a pixel resolutionof 800 480x. With Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen technology, Plus it is responsive, and it is renowned for its ability to offer great display quality when in direct sunlight. The handset itself is very slim, at 8.5 mm and weighs just 116 grams.

The iPhone 4S is similar in many respects to the Samsung Galaxy S2, on paper at least. Software wise, the major difference is in the operating system, with iOS running the intuitive and customisable interface. There are many aspects of the hardware which are similar; the camera is 8 megapixels, with 1080p video just like the Samsung device. However, Apple claims that the camera on the new iPhone has many unique features such as the lens technology and the speed at which the camera operates. The latter is thanks largely to theprocessor, which is a 1 GHz dual-core processor Apple A4 processor. Whilst this is slightly less than the 1.2 GHz offered by the Samsung, it will hardly be noticeable during day to day use. One of Apple's advanTAGes over the competition is its multimedia ecosystem, which allows iPhones to integrate with iTunes, iPod and AppStore. Whilst the likes of the Android Market are impressive, and certainly catching up with Apple, it has to be said that the AppStore is superior in terms of both quality and quantity of available Apps. The iPhone 4S has another advanTAGe over the Samsung Galaxy S2; the fact that it is new. Therefore, Apple has had more time to include its latest technology in the handset. The new Siri and iCloud features are good examples of this, and it gives Apple the edge as thiskind of technology was not around when the Samsung Galaxy S2 was released.

Choosing between the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a close call. Technically, it would be rather unfAir to say that one is better than the other. As the manufacturer's flagship phones, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I believe that the ultimate deciding factor would be down to the individual's preference for either Android or iOS, but having said that, Apple may have the edge thanks to its all new features like Siri and iCloud, as Samsung currently has nothing similar to offer.

Mobile Application Aims to Inform Customers of Their Home Energy Use Habits

Recently a new application developed by the Danish company Kamstrup was announced. This application allows electricity consumers to view up to date data about their consumption. The application is available for iOS and Android devices in the App Store and Google Play store.

The application does not take a novel approach to data visualization. It provides a bar graph with accompanying text data. This is unlike the application we designed which takes a novel approach to data visualization through the metaphor of an emptying fish tank. However, I still feel that the application is relevant to the theme of this blog. This is because the application seeks to give consumers awareness about the limited resources that they consume.

The application has alarms that can be configured to alert the user when energy usage has surpassed set limits. The real time aspect of the application allows users to be more proactive about their data usage. Instead of the usual monthly granularity, users can look at day-to-day trends and even year-to-year trends. This allows them to make much more informed decisions, and hopefully decisions which lead to better efficiency. Consumers can also take action within a day or two of unusually high energy use taking place rather than waiting to respond after receiving a large monthly billing statement.

As more applications such as this one are developed and released to the public, awareness of consumption may become much more mainstream. We believe mobile bandwidth monitoring applications will become much more popular once unlimited data plans are completely phased out. The driving factor behind the adoption of these monitoring applications will generally be money. Consumers are always looking for ways to minimize cost. By investing a few dollars in a mobile phone application they could save potentially thousands more.

Mobile Internet Stats

Every year, Cisco Systems, the company that manufactures a majority of the hardware that runs the internet, compiles vital statistics for its networks worldwide.

According to the Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, a part of Cisco's yearly forecast, smartphone data usage is exploding by over doubling (2.3x) the previous year. This trend is not new either. Over the past four years, the doubling trend has burdened service providers that are staggering to keep up with demand. When you look at the magnitude of data consumption, it is not hard to believe why unlimited data plans are coming to an end. Last year's mobile traffic alone was over eight times the traffic on the entire internet in 2000. Much of the consumption comes from the increase in video streaming sites, which make up 52% of the data downloaded.

Even with introduction of tiered data plans, the top 1% of users use 24% of the bandwidth. By 2016, global mobile data will have increased 18x since last year, posing a huge problem to existing infrastructure. In raw numbers, that amounts to 10.8 exabytes per month. For those who have not heard "exabytes" before, 1 exabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 megabytes. Service providers will have to find ingenious solutions to handling this explosive growth.

Speed Test

I've come across an interesting application on the Android store; however, similar applications are available on the Apple app store as well. I downloaded the free application called Sensorly. Sensorly allows me to test my network speed in my current location. It is an very informative application, it can even possible give you the final nudge to switch services depending on where you are and what speeds you are getting. Personally on Verizon in San Luis Obispo at the Cal Poly library, I get download speeds of 1.66 Mbps and upload speeds of .85 Mbps.

The scope of this program goes beyond just reporting the users speed.  It will compare your results to others with different carries in your area. Unfortunately this is very users based, so the comparison results would depend on other users with this application that have run a speed test in your area. Less populated cities such as San Luis Obispo are at a disadvantage compared to San Francisco or LA. The speed test takes 2.85 MB, so if you have that much to spare its worth finding out what service is the best for you in your area.

Samsung Galaxy Notes: 1 Month Later (Review)

Samsung Galaxy Notes: 1 Month Later (Review) Video Clips. Duration : 10.88 Mins.

Samsung Galaxy Notes: 1 Month Later (Review) My initial impression of the Galaxy Note when it was announced was that it was laughably big. The phone/tablet hybrid was introduced as big smartphone displays were becoming the norm. But having gotten used to devices in the 4-inch range, I just couldn't fathom using the Note's oversized 5.3-inch screen as my daily driver. How I was wrong. After nearly a month of use, every other smartphone experience literally pales in comparison. Even the HTC Titan, which I've sung the praises of before, takes some getting used to because the screen is so much smaller. Browsing, messaging, watching video and using apps is that much better on the Galaxy Known because there's so much screen real estate. And my biggest apprehension, the portability, is an absolutenon-factor. It's easy to use, talk on and isn't an issue in my pocket.
