Apple and Tesla Motors in Secret Meeting

Posted by Unknown Senin, 17 Februari 2014 0 komentar
Everybody loves secret meetings.

Secret meetings are even better when they involve two of the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley: Apple and Tesla Motors. They’re a mysterious and exciting duo, to say the least. So what exactly transpired at this undercover meeting?

There has been much speculation. Some whispers indicate Apple is mulling acquiring the upstart eco-car company, including a report by sfgate.com.

The buyout would seem like a great idea for Apple, which is struggling to produce the kind of innovation seen during the Steve Jobs-era, and has been looking to expand out of the consumer electronics market.

But an acquisition wouldn’t make much sense for Tesla, with its stock price rocketing in the past year and the eagerly awaited release of the Model X SUV. However, friends in extremely high places with a track records for ground-breaking innovation are always nice to have.

A more realistic – albeit though dull – theory speculates that the two companies are combining forces in a new battery factory. Tesla recently announced such a battery plant, claiming the new units will more than double gigawatt battery global output. Funnily enough, these new batteries are the same type used by Apple, as reported by 9to5mac.com.

The secret meeting comes after months of Tesla recruiting of former Apple employees such as Kristin Paget and an increase in Apple acquisitions, leading speculation to run wild with this Justice League-like meeting uncovered.

Google Acquires SlickLogin

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
SlickLogin has been acquired by Google, just five months after launching at TechCrunch Disrupt.
Word of the acquisition is confirmed by a notice on the company’s site, where they say that they’ll be joining Google in their efforts to “make the Internet safer for everyone”. We’ve also confirmed this news with Google.

Exact details of the deal are still under wraps.

The idea behind SlickLogin was, at the very least, quite novel: to verify a user’s identity and log them in, a website would play a uniquely generated, nearly-silent sound through your computer’s speakers. An app running on your phone would pick up the sound, analyze it, and send the signal back to the site’s server confirming that you are who you say you are — or, at least, someone who has that person’s phone.

The service was built to be used either as a password replacement, or as a secondary, Two-Factor authentication layer on top of a traditional password. The company rolled their product into a small, closed Beta after debuting it at Disrupt, and hadn’t yet opened it up to everyone when they were acquired.

Device Review: Chromcast

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 11 Februari 2014 0 komentar

You probably have heard of this device or you even own one. That's fine. So what's the latest gist about it. We'll get to that soon, but lets do a short review of the device for the benefits of those who are just getting to know about it.

Chromecast is a digital media player developed by Google. The device, a 2.83-inch (72 mm) HDMI dongle, plays audio/video content on a high-definition television by directly streaming it via Wi-Fi from the Internet or a local network. Users select the media to play from Chromecast-enabled mobile apps and Web apps, or through a beta feature called "tab casting" that can mirror most content from the web browser Google Chrome. The device was announced on July 24, 2013, and made available for purchase on the same day in the United States for US$35.

So what's new?
Google opened Chromecast Software Development Kit (SDK) to all developers some days back enabling them to create their own applications for the streaming media stick and today we learned through TNW that Chromecast will be available in the UK tentatively from March 1 through electronics retailer Currys.
Chromecast will soon get more great apps including the likes of Rdio and Beats Music as both companies have announced through Twitter that they are currently developing their Chromecast-compatible apps that will stream music through subscribers’ TVs.
“Our team is already working on developing support for Chromecast. Stay tuned!” tweetedRdio.

Mobile Ads Gist

Posted by Unknown Senin, 10 Februari 2014 0 komentar
InMobi is making its biggest push so far in capturing a larger share of the $11.9 billion mobile advertising market, as it launches its new video ad platformtoday.
The new mobile video platform also underscores InMobi’s growing ambitions beyond being a pure ad network, and seriously challenge Google and Facebook as a more broad-based rival in the ecosystem. Last year in October, InMobi launched a white label app store for publishers to boost mobile ads.

InMobi’s transition to becoming a more broad-based mobile ad company reflects a much deeper shift in the market. As the installed base of smartphones is rising, users are spending much more time consuming content on their mobiles. Everybody from Google to Facebook are following this shift, and it’s becoming exciting to track how each one of them is innovating in a year when traditional banner ads are supposed to be dead.

Google Fiber Serving Up To 1000Mbps

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 07 Februari 2014 0 komentar
Guess what? Google is at it again! Last month, Google launched a fiber network that is 100 times faster than today's basic broadband which is up to 1,000 Mbps (Megabytes Per Second). Thats a big wow!!! :-o right? Not yet, let me give you the gist of its capacity.

Google Fiber network has a bigger pipeline which means no compression required to deliver a crystal clear HD Movie, 100 photos, 100 songs, or a game download at 1000Mbps unlike your regular speed which is perhaps 5mbps or even less. Now, that is superfast!!! Unfortunately, it is not everywhere yet. It was first launched at Provo city last month and extending to other cities in the US. Trust google, they can connect the world on their fiber. Then, it means we are fast moving into the era where you watch your TV via internet since you no longer have to wait on things buffering; everything will be ready to go when you are. So whether you are watching TV, video chatting, uploading family videos, or playing your favorite online games, all you need to do is click and you're there.

Dropbox: Expansion Looms

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Dropbox is growing so fast it will soon run out of room at its San Francisco headquarters. That’s why it’s just signed a 12-year lease on a second office a 10-minute walk away at 333 Brannan to house spillover of its 500 employees, sources close to the company tell me. Kilroy Realty put out a press release bragging about leasing the space to Dropbox.
Back in 2012, Dropbox moved from an 11,000 square foot Mid-Market office into its current spot at 185 Berry St in the China Basin area of San Francisco’s South Park district. Originally that office was 87,000 square feet, but then Dropbox expanded to more of the building to occupy a total of 200,000 square feet.
Dropbox had less than half the number of employees needed to fill it. With so much ground to cover, employees would often ride scooters and skateboard-like Ripsticks over its polished cement floors. There were lines of unfurnished meeting rooms, and a whole wing of the office was completely uninhabited. But last enterprise press event in December, it was already starting to feel claustrophobic. With so many people walking around, wheeled-locomotion had become too dangerous to attempt. Every area was crammed full of desks as well as LED art, a jam room for musical instruments, and sculptures of its AK-47-toting velociraptor mascot.

Dropbox said it added over 300 employees to the company in 2013, and it showed.
Then last month, Dropbox raised $250 million (with another $150 million possibly in the works), giving it a total of $500 million with which to fuel expansion into the enterprise. Selling to Fortune 500 companies requires a big sales force that likely wouldn’t fit in its current digs.
Sales could be one department housed in the new 333 Brannan location. However, sources close to the company say Dropbox hasn’t decided exactly what part or parts of the team will be booted from the headquarters into its nearby annex.

Dropbox will control all 187,000 square feet of the William McDonough-designed office still under construction at 333 Brannan. It’s a six-story brick and concrete building with the open floor plans preferred by startups, plus a rooftop garden and deck. It will feature a rainwater reclamation system that could cut water usage by 45 percent and energy usage by 26 percent. The location is about a 15-minute walk from BART and a 10-minute walk from Caltrain for employees commuting via public transportation.

Keeping its offices in the city might give Dropbox better luck in some areas of recruiting. Many tech giants choose to build massive campuses in the South Bay then run controversial shuttle buses back and forth from San Francisco so employees can live in the city. But Dropbox’s youthful company culture likely attracts people with little interest of living in social dead-zones like Mountain View and Menlo Park where Google and Facebook have their plots. This way, energetic Dropboxers can live and work in SF (if they’re willing to pay the rent).
By nearly doubling its total office space, Dropbox should have room to house at least another year or two of swift growth. And plenty of dinosaurs.
