BREAKING NEWS: HTC WILL REPLACE YOUR PHONE SCREEN FOR $29 IF IT SHATTERS

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 18 Februari 2014 2 komentar

Are you a fan of HTC? or do you even own one? then you've got to read this. Starting today, anyone who buys a brand new HTC One series device (such as the HTC One, One max, and One mini) gets an expanded warranty for six months from the date of purchase. The expanded warranty covers not just the usual “manufacturer defect” that we’re used to with limited warranties, but
also one full screen replacement should your device fall prey to concrete floors. While HTC doesn’t guarantee your personal data through the warranty process (no one really does) at least it offers advanced replacement for just $29 – a steal when you consider the $150 deductible most insurance companies make you pay.

Along with this one-time screen replacement, HTC One series – including the One Mini and One Max – owners get a number of other perks like 25GB of free Google Drive cloud storage, guaranteed Android updates for two years, extra tech support, and free backup services. HTC claims it has a new “belief” in customer service. We’re happy, but wish it would have converted some years back.

We give HTC credit for trying to attract customers by being nice, especially considering how much it has struggled as Samsung swallowed up the market for the last two years. This program is a first for a warranty policy on accidental breakage with smartphones. Some companies have offered repair guarantees along with certain cases or services, and Apple is rumored to occasionally replace iPhones with broken screens for customers who ask really nicely, but nobody has publicly guaranteed a free screen replacement for six months as part of the warranty. Brag away, HTC. And then add another 1.5 years to that warranty, if you can.

Just yesterday I gave an update of the Mobile World Congress. Today, in Lagos, you probably have heard of Wedding Expos, Fashion Week, Spirit and Wine, blah blah blah... but for Social Media Week its relatively new. or perhaps not really a new gist. But it will interest you to know
that this event made the second most trending on twitter. Now, that is amazing. Amazing because the buzz created around it is obviously effective.
Social Media Week which is currently holding in Nigeria for the second time ever, is an initiative of Crowdcentric an organisation that aims to help make a future where technology and human come together to create a more open, connected and sustainable world. Google Fiber Serving Up To 1000Mbps

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 07 Februari 2014 0 komentar
Guess what? Google is at it again! Last month, Google launched a fiber network that is 100 times faster than today's basic broadband which is up to 1,000 Mbps (Megabytes Per Second). Thats a big wow!!! :-o right? Not yet, let me give you the gist of its capacity.

Google Fiber network has a bigger pipeline which means no compression required to deliver a crystal clear HD Movie, 100 photos, 100 songs, or a game download at 1000Mbps unlike your regular speed which is perhaps 5mbps or even less. Now, that is superfast!!! Unfortunately, it is not everywhere yet. It was first launched at Provo city last month and extending to other cities in the US. Trust google, they can connect the world on their fiber. Then, it means we are fast moving into the era where you watch your TV via internet since you no longer have to wait on things buffering; everything will be ready to go when you are. So whether you are watching TV, video chatting, uploading family videos, or playing your favorite online games, all you need to do is click and you're there.

Dropbox: Expansion Looms

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 04 Februari 2014 0 komentar
Dropbox is growing so fast it will soon run out of room at its San Francisco headquarters. That’s why it’s just signed a 12-year lease on a second office a 10-minute walk away at 333 Brannan to house spillover of its 500 employees, sources close to the company tell me. Kilroy Realty put out a press release bragging about leasing the space to Dropbox.
Back in 2012, Dropbox moved from an 11,000 square foot Mid-Market office into its current spot at 185 Berry St in the China Basin area of San Francisco’s South Park district. Originally that office was 87,000 square feet, but then Dropbox expanded to more of the building to occupy a total of 200,000 square feet.
Dropbox had less than half the number of employees needed to fill it. With so much ground to cover, employees would often ride scooters and skateboard-like Ripsticks over its polished cement floors. There were lines of unfurnished meeting rooms, and a whole wing of the office was completely uninhabited. But last enterprise press event in December, it was already starting to feel claustrophobic. With so many people walking around, wheeled-locomotion had become too dangerous to attempt. Every area was crammed full of desks as well as LED art, a jam room for musical instruments, and sculptures of its AK-47-toting velociraptor mascot.

Dropbox said it added over 300 employees to the company in 2013, and it showed.
Then last month, Dropbox raised $250 million (with another $150 million possibly in the works), giving it a total of $500 million with which to fuel expansion into the enterprise. Selling to Fortune 500 companies requires a big sales force that likely wouldn’t fit in its current digs.
Sales could be one department housed in the new 333 Brannan location. However, sources close to the company say Dropbox hasn’t decided exactly what part or parts of the team will be booted from the headquarters into its nearby annex.

Dropbox will control all 187,000 square feet of the William McDonough-designed office still under construction at 333 Brannan. It’s a six-story brick and concrete building with the open floor plans preferred by startups, plus a rooftop garden and deck. It will feature a rainwater reclamation system that could cut water usage by 45 percent and energy usage by 26 percent. The location is about a 15-minute walk from BART and a 10-minute walk from Caltrain for employees commuting via public transportation.

Keeping its offices in the city might give Dropbox better luck in some areas of recruiting. Many tech giants choose to build massive campuses in the South Bay then run controversial shuttle buses back and forth from San Francisco so employees can live in the city. But Dropbox’s youthful company culture likely attracts people with little interest of living in social dead-zones like Mountain View and Menlo Park where Google and Facebook have their plots. This way, energetic Dropboxers can live and work in SF (if they’re willing to pay the rent).
By nearly doubling its total office space, Dropbox should have room to house at least another year or two of swift growth. And plenty of dinosaurs.

YouTube video platform has paid out more than $1 billion to music - Tom Pickette

Posted by Unknown Senin, 03 Februari 2014 0 komentar
Google Inc. disclosed on Sunday that its YouTube video platform has paid out more than $1 billion to music rights holders "over the last several years," putting the California technology company among the top sources of digital revenue for the embattled music industry outside of download sales.

The statement, made by YouTube VP of content Tom Pickett, came in answer to a question during a panel discussion at Midem in Cannes, France, about how much value Google as a technology platform places on music and whether artists are making meaningful money by
being on the platform. YouTube had earlier stated that it has paid "hundreds of millions of dollars" to the music industry.
"We are very much into music," Pickett said, adding later that, "If you think about it, we’ve paid out to the music industry over the last several years over $1 billion. So there is money being generated in this ad-supported model. It is going to artists."

Pickett pointed out that the money YouTube pays out goes to "thousands and thousands" of musicians and rights holders, addressing the complaint that some individual artists may not see large checks because the per-view payment is relatively small.Jordan Berliant, a panel member and head of music management at The Collective Music Group which represents Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots and Staind, added that YouTube "can be a place to make money," but that, "It’s not a place to make money right now." Berliant added that he doesn't blame YouTube, whose business model relies largely on advertising, which in turn relies on having a massive audience.

The session got testy when panelist Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of BPI and the BRIT Awards, referred the revenue his artists receive from YouTube and other ad-supported music streaming services as "pennies and pence," when compared to paid streaming services such as Spotify's premium tier and Deezer. Taylor said he hoped YouTube will develop a "mixed model" that also includes a paid subscription service.YouTube already has the necessary music licenses to launch a paid subscription music streaming product and is expected to launch its service sometime this year.Taylor took another shot at Google towards the end of the session, accusing the search giant of doing little to remove links to illegal sites that distribute pirated music or sell software that can be used to record music videos on YouTube, Vevo and elsewhere.

"When you know that stuff is illegal, you surely have got the responsibility to take that knowledge into account and do something with your search rankings, which gives the legal sites a chance to put themselves in front of consumers rather than the pirate sites," Taylor said. "To have a really productive partnership, Google and YouTube need to do more on that."Pickett was not given a chance to respond during the panel, which can be viewed in its entirety on YouTube.

    Samsung to Produce "Galaxy Glass"

Posted by Unknown Senin, 27 Januari 2014 0 komentar

Samsung was early to market with a smartwatch in the Galaxy Gear, and now it looks like it might be one of the first in the mix with a glasses-based computing device. A new report from the Korea Times (via Verge) suggests that Samsung is currently developing a Google Glass competitor, which is in fact provisionally named “Galaxy Glass,” set for launch in September at the annual IFA tech conference.

Google has yet to put a firm timeline on the consumer launch of its own Google Glass wearable computer, which is available to developers and early adopters via Google’s ‘Explorer’ program. Some reports had suggested a general launch for late 2013, but then later information from Google revised the release timeline to sometime in 2014. Samsung could conceivably beat Google to the punch, but as we saw with the Galaxy Gear, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

The Gear was likewise telegraphed before its actual launch, with Samsung coming right out and admitting the device was on the way at IFA. This time around, there’s no named source discussing the device, but the Korea Times does quote a Samsung official as saying that the potential in the market is huge, and that Samsung is very interested in getting a first-mover advantage in the space.

As for what Samsung Glass would do, it sounds like it would essentially provide a basic heads-up display for your smartphone on your face, pushing notifications, music playback information and basic controls to the lens of a head-mounted display.

Samsung getting in among the early crop of device-makers hoping to ride this trend is in keeping with its recent strategy, which seems to be one of putting everything they can out as a shipping product. It’s a plan that gets them lots of props as a company eager to pursue innovation and drive new product development, but the first-mover advantage has only questionable use value if these first generation products keep failing to impress.

Both the smartwatch and the eyeware-based computing models are interesting because OEMs seem to be pursuing them fairly aggressively without any evidence that this is a direction consumers necessarily are interested in. We’ll apparently see in September if Samsung has managed to build a face computer that moves the tech forward, however.

    Twitter Tips & Tricks

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 24 Januari 2014 0 komentar

Twitter is a giant digital cafe. It's the same landscape as a party with loose rules and no specific criteria. Some of us are smart, courteous, and know how to interact appropriately, hoping people think well of us and want to communicate more often. Others abuse the situation and don't generate positive attention.

It's up to you to act accordingly and appropriately. The tweets you compose; the photos you take, filter and share; and the videos you upload all manifest themselves as part of your own media. The longer you spend online, the bigger media presence you'll have. So it's important to remember to "think before you speak," or, in this case, tweet. The following guidelines will help:

    • Don't say anything you wouldn't say to your mother.
    • Be nice! This is a public stage, and the spotlight is on you and your company. Being friendly and helpful goes a long way toward building your brand and reputation.
    • Don't be a showoff and tout how great you are; a little humility does wonders when building a brand.
    • Don't sell or pitch. Social media is for connecting, building relationships, networking and creating brand awareness. Coming off as a snake-oil salesman is a huge turnoff.
    • Don't automate. Social media is a two-way conversation, and automated posting is cold. Plus, you want to respond to all posts quickly--so unless someone is actively manning the battle station, your response times to your followers suffer.
    • Don't get angry. If someone is complaining or being rude, reply professionally and never sink to their level.
    • Do care. Take a minute out of your busy schedule to find out more about the lives of those who follow you. These are the people who can become your brand champions, so show them you care about who they are and what they do.
    • Give back! If you've had great success via social media and people are sharing your brand, message and products or services, then give back! A little thank-you discount, prize or giveaway can go a long way and snowball, as recipients spread the word to their followers and friends. Social media users sharing your content and brand is absolutely invaluable, so show them you appreciate it and don't take it for granted.
Before you post, always ask yourself:
    • Do I really want my followers to read this?
    • Will this increase my following?
    • Am I providing something of value, whether it's newsworthy or a joke?
    • Will it help my brand?
    • Can it hurt me?
    • Can it damage my business or brand's reputation?
    • Am I insulting someone or a group of people?
    • Am I spreading rumors, lies or gossip that can damage someone's reputation?

    Social Media Dos and Don'ts

    Do
    • Be empathetic.
    • Be tasteful.
    • Engage with followers regularly--and quickly.
    • Inspire with motivational saying and quotes.
    • Educate by solving people's problems and by sharing your knowledge and expertise.
    • Delight with entertaining comments or jokes.
    • Respond in a timely manner, lest your followers feel ignored.
    Don't
    • Spam followers.
    • Spread rumors or lies.
    • Talk without listening. If you're putting yourself out there, expect responses, replies, praise, criticism and other feedback. Pay attention to what others are saying to you.
    • Lash out. Stop and think before you post or tweet, or have a checks and balances system so that anything going out is reviewed or scanned by at least a second pair of eyes.
    • Be rude, crass or vulgar.
    • Fire someone without revoking access to your social media accounts.
    • Exploit a tragedy or even bad news. It's offensive and in abysmally bad taste. And you're liable to lose even your most loyal followers.

Apple to Launch a bigger version of iPhone

    Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Aching for a bigger iPhone? You may be in luck, because if The Wall Street Journal's latest report is correct, Apple is planning to launch two iPhones with a larger screen this year.
According to the report, one bigger iPhone will have a 4.5-inch display, while the other will have a screen "bigger than 5 inches".
Exact dates when these devices might hit the market are absent, but the 4.5-inch phone is reportedly near mass production, while the bigger device is still in "preliminary development."
Contrary to a rumor we've heard in Nov. 2013, this report claims neither device will have a curved screen.

Both devices will be made of metal, and — the boldest claim in the report — Apple will stop producing plastic phones, such as the iPhone 5C.
Rumors have claimed that the iPhone 5C has not been selling well, but since Apple lumps all its iPhone sales into one big number, we don't know whether they are true. Even if they are, giving up on the iPhone 5C one year after its inception would be uncharacteristic of Apple, which typically keeps an iPhone model in stores for two years or more.

Facebook to Launch Mobile Ad Network

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 23 Januari 2014 0 komentar

Facebook took a step towards offering a mobile ad network on Wednesday with a small test running Facebook ads in mobile apps from other publishers.
"Our aim is to demonstrate even greater reach with the same power of Facebook targeting for advertisers both on and off Facebook," the company wrote in a blog post. "While we have run similar tests in the past, this current test is more like a mobile ad network in that we are working directly with a small number of advertisers and publishers rather than an outside ad-serving platform."
For the user, there won't be a noticeable difference. An ad you see on a third-party app may have been presented by Facebook, but it would look the same. In theory, advertisers are getting the benefit of Facebook's deep targeting. If you want to reach 26-year-old men from Toledo, Ohio, who are into beach volleyball, Facebook will help you do that, via Facebook and now, through other mobile apps as well. Which apps? Facebook declined to say.
Facebook first tested a mobile ad network in late 2012, but pulled it after three months. The company resumed the effort in September 2013. As the blog post notes, the difference this time is that Facebook is taking a direct role in connecting advertisers and publishers. Previously, Facebook had sold ads through existing ad-serving networks and publishers.

WhatsApp Active Users Double in Less than a year

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum announced on Monday that the cross-platform mobile-messaging app now has 430 million active users. That's up from 200 million in April 2013, which means its user base has more than doubled in less than a year.
The number of messages sent and received via WhatsApp has increased, as well, from 20 billion per day to 50 billion per day.
Private messaging is becoming increasingly popular of late, especially for social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat — and yet, it seems WhatsApp continues to hold its own.
Statista's chart, above, shows the progression of WhatsApp's active user base and daily-message volume over the past 10 months.
