Android application review: My Data Manager Free

In current times the "smart" phone is very popular. These phones are traditionally chained to a data plan that will allow the users to use mobile data up to to their data plan cap. If the user goes over the cap there will be immense overage costs. The monitoring of data usage is important to in order to avoid these overage charges.

My Data Manager is a paid application on the Google Play store for Android based devices. This application is traditionally about $4 on the store, but has a free version that people can test out. My Data Manger boasts an impressive rating of 4.5/5 stars in both the free and paid version.

To analyze this application I had 5 other individuals who have android based devices. The individuals were asked to complete a series of tasks and rate their experience. These instructions should only have taken no more than 5 minutes, so if the user got stuck they were told to skip the task and move on.
  1. Install "My Data Manager Free".
  2. Run the application and set up the program to begin monitoring data.
  3. Configure a notification when 1, 2, and 3 MB or data has been reached.
  4. Disable anonymous reporting of usage.
  5. View pie chart of data consuming applications.
  6. View the current amount of data being used from the notification drop down
After completing the task they were asked to fill out a survey. This survey has a 0-5 rating system where 0 is the worst possible experience and 5 is the est possible experience. The user  was asked to rate their experience for performing each instruction. The results are below.

Person 1 Person 2 Person 3 Person 4 Person 5
Instruction 1 5 5 5 5 5
Instruction 2 5 4 4 4 5
Instruction 3 4 4 3 4 4
Instruction 4 3 5 4 3 3
Instruction 5 5 5 5 5 5
Instruction 6 4 5 4 5 5

Insights
I only observed the participants perform the required tasks from above. The tasks only took them a few minutes and I only asked them general questions about the usability of this application. From what I have observed and learned from comments of the users, individuals prefer a short and simple set up process for mobile applications. In general, less overhead is more desirable. The ease of access to the information the users desires is very important as well. There seems to be a general agreement that launching an application is less desirable than having the information always readily available on the screen. There was not any documentation, but from the information from the 5 test subjects, it was not necessary. Furthermore, this was a free version of an application, the full version has greater arsenal of functionality.

Recommendations
  1.  The color contrast was a bit difficult to see at times
  2.  Not all distributions of android show the same color scheme
  3. If possible, an auto complete that will go to your mobile provider and pull the necessary information so there is no "guess" work.
Overall I would definitely suggest people get this application. Its very easy to use and I totally agree with the comments from the Google play store as well as my own evaluations.  I myself have a smart phone and agree that monitoring mobile data usage is very important to avoid these overage charges.
