Introduction

Welcome to Log and Load. This blog will be dedicated to the discussion of topics related to a common problem smartphone users face: How do they keep track of their data usage in a useful and unobtrusive way? Brian X. Chen of the New York Times recently published an article entitled "A Ballooning Megabyte Budget" in which he describes in detail the problem we (the authors of this blog) are trying to solve.

The Problem at Hand

People are generally used to budgeting their limited resources. Resources such as time and money naturally lend themselves to budgeting. People deal with this resources every day and generally understand the value of each. A problem that mobile data consumers face is how to budget their monthly allowance of data when they don't have a concrete understanding of the value of a kilobyte or megabyte. Chen does a good job of describing data in terms that a layperson can understand: "A megabyte is, in this context, 1,000 kilobytes — or about the size of a photo taken with a decent digital camera, or roughly one minute of a song, or a decent stack of e-mail." He goes on to succinctly describe the problem we hope to solve in our upcoming design for a mobile phone application: "Therein lies the problem: Counting things like minutes and text messages is fairly easy, but there is no intuitive or natural way to gauge data use." I'll repeat the key idea "there is no intuitive or natural way to gauge data use." We hope to design a natural way for data users to budget their monthly mobile data usage so they can avoid extra fees at the end of each month.

Our Motivation to Solve this Problem

The problem is only going to get worse as Cisco describes in a recent paper: "Global mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold between 2011 and 2016." This means that consumers will have to become hyper vigilant about staying within monthly data allowances if they are to avoid overage charges. In Chen's article, Schwark Satyavoula says that its "in the best interest of carriers like AT&T and Verizon to keep consumers in the dark." If this is the case, it maybe up to developers like ourselves to design unobtrusive applications which help users protect themselves from a lack of information.
